Fake news is a type of hoax or deliberate spread of misinformation, be it via the traditional news media or via social media, with the intent to mislead in order to gain financially or politically.

Survey on Fake News:



Causes:
  • Rumours or fake posts on websites and social media.
  • Lack of knowledge of the relevant field.


Solution:
  • We will make an app and a browser extension.
  • Both will be connected to a server which can decide whether a news/post is fake or not.
  • Also, the server will provide relevant data for working of app and extension.
Why News App?
  • It will not be relevant to create an app which only shows fake news/posts.
  • News app will also show related rumours with specific news heading which is being shown to the user.
  • There will be a column for top fake news/posts which are currently popular.
  • There will be topics of different interest in the fake news section.
  • Also, there will be a rating system for experts of different field of interests and for normal users. Ratings of experts will be preferred over user ratings.
Why Browser Extension?

  • The Extension will generate notifications when a user will read a fake news/posts on any website or social media.
  • The Extension will also collect data from trusted websites and evolve the database of server to create more online trusted resources of news/posts.
Targeted Users:

According to the survey, adults ageing between 19 to 30 years are found to be most influenced followed by children of age 10 to 18 years. 

Future Enhancements

  • The user will be able to share the awareness about fake news directly from app or extension on facebook and Whatsapp.
  • Reporting of sites which are spreading fake news.
  • For active participation, the user will be able to play quizzes about fake news/post and cyber security.
